Goood morning everybody!  Hope you had a nice weekend.  Let’s get right to the chart.  A number of tracks are down this week because of holiday programming.  Many of these records will regain their bullets this week, so hold tight.  As John “Bluto” Blutowski from Animal House said, “Over?  Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is.”  Moving into the #1 active rock slot this week, Red Hot Chili Peppers “Dark Necessities.”  Volbeat “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” dropped to #2 after 9 weeks at #1.  #3 is Shinedown “Asking For It.”  At 4^, Chevelle “Joyride,” up 30 spins.  At 5, Ghost “From the Pinnacle to the Pit.” (more…)

On the Radar, week of June 20

artRobert England

This past weekend was a tough one. Many of us lost a good friend to a rare form of cancer. Art Phillips came to Album Network from being the MD at KILO. I first met him when he started as the music editor at the Sunset Blvd office in 1983. I was working as a music industry messenger at the time. I eventually became co-workers with Art and we had many adventures together over the years. One time that comes to mind as I write this was when MCA Records dropped by our office with a tour bus and kidnapped us to play us the new Fixx record. As we weaved through the long Angeles Crest Highway, the party was even better with Art present. If you couldn’t find him in his office at the end of the day, he was likely on the roof of our Burbank office with Mark Cope getting their creative juices flowing with a little help. He loved music and he was an animal lover; Rosebud and Clancy were his Boston Terriers who I used to house sit. He was a big Dodgers fan and went to many games with Ray Gmeiner and me. He was such a wonderful friend. We will all miss you, Art. You made a lasting impression in all of the lives you touched. Art and Jill were the most loving couple I have ever met, and Jill was by his side at the end. Rest in Peace, my friend.

This week, “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” celebrates the 7th week at the #1 slot. The album, “Seal the Deal and Let’s Boogie” is the #2 selling album at active rock this week: 11,577 sold. Single sales: 2,894. In the rear view mirror and getting closer at 2^, Red Hot Chili Peppers “Dark Necessities,” up 75 spins. Now only 233 spins separate the two. At 3^, Shinedown “Asking For It,” up 187 spins. Moving a notch to 4^, Chevelle “Joyride,” up 82 spins. Their highly anticipated album, “The Northern Corridor” is in stores July 8. At 5^, Ghost “From the Pinnacle to the Pit,” up 54 spins. (more…)

The Comedic Rock Adventures of Robert England

IMG_1289 (1)“I’ve been lucky enough to meet a lot of rock icons; Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Michael Hutchinson, Peter Frampton, oh and Little Richard pinched my butt. I was at a chateau in Italy with U2, and Bono served wine with the caveat that there were no preservatives/no hangovers. Was that true, you ask? I don’t know…I was drinking tequila.” -Robert England

By Carl C. Sundberg

Some people are funny, some people are not. We can all pretty much agree on that. But when it comes to the people who are, in fact, funny, being around them brings up the mood of an entire room. It’s a gift. Funny people are rare.

Robert England is indeed, one of the rare breed of humans who are in fact, genuinely funny. Not in any sort of forced, “hey look at me, everyone!” sort of way. No, Robert England is naturally funny like Tom Cruise is naturally handsome.

Like Lady Gaga, he was just born this way.

At least, to us mortals of the comic persuasion, it seems that is the case. (more…)
